Akram Al Halabi
Visual Artist
Akram Al Halabi (b. 1981, the occupied Golan Heights) is a visual artist whose practice spans drawing, painting, video, and sound. He studied drawing and painting at Bait Al Fan (1997–2000) and later attended the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, receiving his BA in Fine Arts in 2005. In 2003, he participated in the Summer Academy at Darat Al Funun in Amman under the supervision of Prof. Marwan Kassab Bashi.
In 2007, Al Halabi moved to Austria through the One World Scholarship of the Afro-Asiatisches Institut to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he graduated with distinction in 2012 from the class of Prof. Erwin Bohatsch. During this time, he was also an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Umeå, Sweden. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the IKL program Education in the Arts (2013–2015), and attended MA program in Digital Art Compositing at the Film Academy Vienna (2015–2017).
His work has been presented internationally in exhibitions including New Future at Museo di Palazzo Poggi, Bologna (2013); IMAGETEXTE3 at Topographie de l’Art, Paris (2014); Creating Common Good at Kunst Haus Wien – Museum Hundertwasser, Vienna (2015); and Diaspora Now: Contemporary Arts around the Homeland at the Museum of Fine Arts Gifu, Japan (2017).
In 2011 he received the First Prize of the Künstler am Werk – Lenzing Wettbewerb at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2026, Akram held an artist residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, as part of the project “Sounds of Places” by The Wonder Cabinet. His works are held in several public and private collections, including the British Museum (Department of the Middle East, London) and the Kupferstichkabinett in Vienna.
