Liquid Lands

Collaborative audiovisual project By Busher Kanj & Akram Al Halabi. The project presented as part of Mediterranean Seasons by the French Institute, and Sound of Place by The Wonder Cabinet, and Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. 2026. Video Duration: 32:31

This audiovisual/installation work is based on archival footage and field recordings from the artists’ homeland, the Golan Heights: since 1967, a territory marked by occupation and rupture, often rendered peripheral in dominant narratives, and experienced by its inhabitants as a space of suspended belonging, where identity is continuously shaped and challenged by displacement, migration, political ambiguity, and a sense of historical and geographical dislocation. This experience has shaped the generations that followed, perhaps resulting in a unique and unconventional outlook on the world, and the formation of a community defined by paradoxes.

The project treats its sonic and visual sources as sensory materials rather than documentary or archival evidence. These materials form the foundation for video art, animation, field recordings, and composition.

This work presents the concept of “Liquid Lands” as a condition in which geography, meaning, and memory are in constant flux. Here, migration is understood not merely as the movement of individuals, but as a deeper displacement affecting history, memory, and identity.
